I toyed with the idea of becoming a comic book artist, and started going to college for it, too! I was 18 when I got my first tattoo at a comic con in the summer. I wasn't sure exactly what route I wanted to go down. Wes : I've always been a real artsy kid ever since I can remember, I've wanted to make it into a career. I was fascinated by the history and cultural and ceremonial significance of these practices, as well. Tattoos, scarification, and piercings were so beautiful to me, I saw them as a way to reclaim your vessel and celebrate your life experiences. It was the beginning of me starting to feel out of place in the world and in my body. Michelle : I first became interested in body modification in middle school. How and when did you first become interested in the tattoo industry/community? Here’s what Michelle Pomerantz (she/they), Wesley Tucker (he/him), and Chelsea Brazzo (she/her) had to say about it all: This is where tattoo shops, like Birdhouse Tattoo, come into play by changing the game and upgrading to sustainable tattoo supplies! I had the chance to interview 3 artists from Birdhouse Tattoo, who are also members of the LGBTQIA+ community, about their experiences with sustainable and unsustainable tattooing in Portland. Just from reading this list, it’s evident that most, if not all, of these supplies are unsustainable. For example, A-Esthetic Medical & Aesthetic Equipment provides a list of the typical supplies you would need to start tattooing, includeing autoclave tattoo sterilizer (metal & steel machinery), autoclave trays (made from thermoplastic polypropylene or occasionally metal), disinfecting liquid for surfaces, plastic cover sheets for beds & chairs, plastic cover for the tattoo machine, special waste container (typically made of plastic), latex gloves, Vaseline, disposable razors, ink holds (typically plastic), and on and on (“What Equipment Do You Need”). ![]() This growth in the industry led to different supplies and equipment being utilized. Over time, tattooing practices and equipment evolved in the United States. Upon arrival, the settlers noticed the traditional ink markings of the Indigenous peoples and decided to adopt the trend (Rabun). A resurgence of tattooing in the American West happened during the 1800s when European settlers invaded the lands of the Polynesians, Inuit, and Native Americans. Tattooing around the world has existed for thousands of years. It is an everlasting gem that you will take into your grave.” (“Skin Stories”). Tattoos can range from the size of a pea to encompassing your entire back, but one thing is certain, they will always be with you.Ī traditional Samoan tattoo artist’s song goes something like this: “Your necklace may break, the fau tree may burst, but my tattooing is indestructible. Getting tattooed can even help people express their traumas in a healthy way, which is increasingly important in today’s unstable society.
